Driving throughout the Truckee Meadows and Carson Valley region it's hard to miss the growth -- both residential and commercial -- that is occurring everywhere. Vacant lots in established neighborhoods are being developed, and new neighborhoods are creeping up hillsides. The City of Reno estimates the population across the Truckee Meadows may double in the next 20 years to 600,000 people. Certainly, with that kind of growth come growing pains. Fortunately, our northern Nevada community is not practicing an ostrich-style management approach. Organizations such as the Truckee Meadows Regional Planning Agency, Truckee Meadows Tomorrow, the Regional Transportation Commission and a host of private citizens and other organizationsa are working -- often together -- to create the vision and plans for carefully managing this growth.
