Reno Area Special Events:

Reno has one of the greatest lineups of special events in the country. Art connoisseurs, aviation junkies, bikers, bobby-soxers, film buffs, aeronauts, free spirits, winter sports enthusiasts and genuine American cowboys all have a Reno event they can call their own. If all of the Reno events were held on a single day, the mass of people attending would include a cast of characters that would rival any Hollywood epic. Fortunately, the events are evenly spread across several months of sunny weather and afternoon breezes.

Buckaroos, waddies, cowpokes and dudes ride into Elko every winter to share a tale or two around the campfire at the annual Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The culture of the American Cowboy is celebrated with poetry readings, musical performances and a variety of workshops on everything from "Rawhide Braiding" to swing dancing.

Come find out how long eight seconds can really be when the "Wildest Richest Rodeo in the West" opens the gates every June. The best cowboys in the world try to stay on some of the meanest critters this side of the Rio Grande for a shot at the generous purse. When bulldoggers, bronc busters, bullfighters and barrel racers come to town, it can only mean one thing - the Reno Rodeo has begun.

Dance, theater, visual arts and more are showcased in the annual Artown festival that runs the entire month of July. Nightly exhibitions and performances are held against the backdrop of Reno's revitalized downtown and Riverwalk area. There are free concerts, performance art exhibitions, and gallery shows, making Reno a true cultural destination.

The clock rolls back on the Biggest Little City every summer when Hot August Nights cruises into town. A celebration of 50s and 60s culture, Hot August Nights finds thousands of classic cars taking over the streets of downtown while the Rock 'n' Roll greats of the era grace local stages, performing their hit songs.

Quiet please! Silence is respectfully requested every August when the PGA Tour visits Reno for the Reno-Tahoe Open at Montreux Golf and Country Club. Some of the greatest golfers on the tour come to town for a shot at the $3 million purse.

The Burning Man festival takes place in the Black Rock Desert approximately ninety miles north of Reno. This unique festival is an artistic gathering of free spirits who convene on the desert to build an entire temporary city on the harsh desert playa. The climax of the festival is the torching of a large neon lit figure that perishes in a giant bonfire.

The early September skies fill with brilliant bursts of color every morning during the Great Reno Balloon Race. The gentle giants compete for three days of airborne racing. Spectators who make it to Rancho San Rafael Park before sunup for each day's kickoff are rewarded with "Dawn Patrol," a spectacular display of glowing balloons in the dawn sky.

Warbirds, bi-planes and custom made racers roar across Nevada skies every September during the National Championship Air Races. Vintage propeller driven and jet aircraft race on the deck and around pylons while military and civilian aircraft perform death defying stunts for the grandstand crowds.

Every fall the asphalt shakes and the air vibrates with the sound of thousands of throaty engines as Street Vibrations takes to the road. The annual homage to the American motorcycle features rallys, show and shines, concerts and other motorcycle events. Throw on your leathers and thunder around town on your shiny chrome hog.

Legends of the silver screen visit Reno every fall to celebrate a lifetime of movie making during the Reno Film Festival. Honored guests of the festival have included Rod Steiger, Tony Curtis and director George Sidney. Attendees of the festival enjoy an informal atmosphere where cinema greats discuss their most watched movies in intimate forums.
